The Detroit Lions are making a lot of changes in 2021. While most of the major changes (quarterback and head coach) are already solidified, the decision as to who is going to take a majority of the carries is still up in the air. However, a change in the odds could have given us the answer.

WynnBET changed D’Andre Swift’s odds to lead the league in rushing from +7500 to +2500. Less than two weeks ago, Betsided’s Peter Dewey wrote about how Swift was expected to be a part of a running back committee this season. Swift’s odds took a very big jump, hinting at the fact that Swift will be the workhorse in the Lions’ backfield.

As a rookie last season, Swift took 114 carries for 521 yards and eight touchdowns. His 114 carries barely broke the top 50 backs in the league. Having +2500 odds puts Swift in the middle of the standings list.

Swift was also able to contribute to the Lions’ offense by catching passes out of the backfield. He caught 46 passes for 378 yards and two touchdowns last season.

If Swift takes the leap his odds suggest, Detroit will have a serious offensive weapon. As far as skill positions go, the Lions are struggling. They lost Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones Jr. in free agency, leaving only T.J. Hockenson as a notable pass catcher. Swift’s emergence could take pressure off of Hockenson to be the only source of offense and surely make Jared Goff’s job easier.

The Lions are expected to be one of the lowest-scoring teams in the league (they have the worst odds to lead the league in scoring), but could find a bright spot with Swift.
